Kansas State

The Wichita Mid-Continent Airport, also Kansas' most used airport, was built in just three and a half years. On an initial budget of just ten million dollars in 1954, this was a monumental feat as far as airports go. By 1989, the airport was given a lump of six million dollars to complete a terminal renovation. Ten years later and a change in management saw the airport supervised by the Wichita City Council and now the Authority Board. As a result, all revenues taken in by the airport are used for and only for airport operation costs and airport specific goals. Much of Wichita Airport's expansion funds come directly from the FAA in the form of the Airport Improvement Program.

The staff at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport work by the motto, "Convenient, friendly, affordable" in which they work together to get the most out of all three pillars. By being friendly, employees offer a convenient and enjoyable experience that will relax everyone. And by offering superior customer service, they effectively reduce the cost of all fares because they are not concerned with the bottom line. The core of what makes Wichita Mid-Continent Airport work is their determination to balance the books. Annually, the airport costs ten million dollars and they consistently pull an extra four million dollars in revenue afterward. Most of this money is directed to only Airport related expenses and the rest is used or saved for future upkeep costs.

Following 2002, with the addition of more large name airlines landing and departing from Wichita, the fares to and from saw a dramatic reduction in cost. As much as sixty percent was slashed off their most used routes. Their new networks, airlines, customer service standards, and revenue handling has led to a boom in local tourism, as well as general airport use to date.
